Visoiu battles his way into the points-paying finish at Spa-Francorchamps

Both Visoiu and Boschung struggled in a rain-affected qualifying session as the Swiss driver finished 5th in the free practice session run in dry conditions

Campos Racing drivers experienced a demanding race weekend of the FIA Formula 2 at Spa-Francorchamps following a particularly positive opening free practice session on Friday morning. However, heavy rain-marred qualifying session in the afternoon prevented both Ralph Boschung and Robert Visoiu equalling their previous performance as they started from the back of the field. Visoiu still made it into the points on Saturday.

On Friday, Boschung took an impressive 5th place in the free practice session with a lap of 1:58.421 in his Campos Racing-entered Dallara GP2/11, a mere five tenths off Charles Leclerc. Visoiu, in his Dallara, posted a lap time of 1:58.805. However, Boschung and Visoiu couldn’t improve 14th and 17th in qualifying with their 2:23.737 and 2:24.215 respectively.

In race one, Boschung and Visoiu moved through the field on lap one running 12th and 13th. Visoiu still gained another place after overtaking Alex Albon on lap six and then making his mandatory pit stop two laps later. Boschung pitted on lap nine. After the pit stops Visoiu and Boschung were running ninth and eleventh. In the dying moments of the race, both drivers needed to cope with tire wear but Visoiu still managed to take 10th at the chequered flag.

On Sunday, Boschung stalled on the starting grid and was forced to start from the pit lane. Visoiu fought with Leclerc and Oliver Rowland to finish 16th. On the other hand, Boschung performed a recovery race and finished 13th.

Monza will host Round 9 of the FIA Formula 2 next weekend.
