The Italian driver had moved up to sixth place from the back of the starting grid when a tear off lodged in his Dallara radiator forced him to retire
Lady Luck wasn’t on Campos Racing’s side during the GP3 Series round at Spa-Francorchamps this weekend as Leonardo Pulcini’s superb recovery drive was ruined by a tear off strip. On the whole, it was a difficult round for Campos Racing and its drivers Pulcini, Simo Laaksonen and Diego Menchaca and their efforts didn’t pay off.
Laaksonen spearheaded the charge for Campos Racing and posted the 7th-fastest lap time with his 2m04.633s. Pulcini qualified five places behind with a best lap of 2m04.495s. Finally, Menchaca lined up 17th by clocking a time of 2:05.782s in his Dallara GP3/16.
Saturday’s race 1 got underway with moisture on the surface and it was extremely easy to make mistakes. Campos Racing drivers couldn’t gain places at the beginning and it prevented from getting a better result. Laaksonen ended up 12th with Pulcini 15th. Menchaca came 19th.
On Sunday Pulcini’s performance was a real eye-catcher. Race 2 was slightly delayed due to poor visibility at Spa-Francorchamps but when the red lights went out, the Campos Racing driver made a sensational start and had moved up to ninth after the first lap. Pulcini moved past Ryan Tveter and Giuliano Alesi a few moments later and still gained another place by overtaking Joey Mawson. His race came to an early end the due to the tear off strip issue mentioned above. Laaksonen took the checkered flag in 13th place and Menchaca finished 16th.
The GP3 Series will head to Monza next weekend.
