The Swiss driver completed a solid feature race on Saturday in his Campos Racing-run Dallara. Unfortunately, Boschung was forced to retire on Sunday when another driver crashed into him. Samaia put in a recovery drive on Sunday
Campos Racing contested the last round of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship season, which took place in Sakhir this weekend. Guilherme Samaia and Ralph Boschung drove both Campos Racing-entered Dallara cars and, despite they couldn’t produce the result that they’d imagined, overall it was a promising performance. Particularly for Boschung, as the Swiss driver made his comeback after over a year away from racing.
On Friday, Boschung made a good start to the weekend as he finished 13th-fastest on the timesheets with a lap time of 1m04.014s after completing 24 laps. His teammate Samaia posted a lap time of 1m04.366s in which was a closely-fought practice session with only a few tenths separating the 22-car field. The qualifying session was another big lottery due to yellow and red flags. As a result, Boschung and Samaia couldn’t improve their lap times of 1m03.403s and 1m03.552s and set to start from the back of the field but came into the races with high hopes.
Saturday’s feature race 1 saw an action-packed first lap in which Samaia was forced to make an early pit stop following a clash. Boschung gained several places in the first stages before making his mandatory pit stop in lap 15. Campos Racing’s quick pit work allowed him to overtake another couple of cars to take the checkered flag in 14th place. Samaia, following his first lap incident, finished 22nd.
Boschung made a good start on Sunday and moved up to 13th in the first laps. Unfortunately, a rival crashed into Boschung’s car in lap 10 and it resulted in damage for his rear left tire. Boschung headed into the pit lane and couldn’t rejoin the race. Samaia’s performance was good as he passed several cars and finished 19th.
The FIA Formula 2 post season collective testing is set to take place on December 8-10 on the circuit’s Grand Prix layout.
