Race incidents cost Campos Vexatec Racing drivers a podium finish in Baku

Ghiotto started from row two on Saturday but was forced to retire after crashing out of race one when running third. Nissany was in contention for a top-5 finish but his race also came to an early end due to a crash

Campos Vexatec Racing and their duo of drivers in the FIA Formula 2, Luca Ghiotto and Roy Nissany, managed to set competitive pace in the second round in Baku but several race incidents dashed podium hopes in the frame of the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan. Ghiotto and Nissany performed extremely well in their Campos Vexatec Racing-run Dallara F2 2018 cars and this weekend suggests that a highly competitive season of racing.

During Friday’s free practice session, Ghiotto was on fine form and was second fastest on the timesheets with a lap time of 1m57.208s. His teammate Nissany, making his first appearance in Baku’s street circuit, also completed a good session scoring a best lap of 1m59.081s. These results brought optimism ahead of qualifying. There, Ghiotto ended the qualifying session in fourth place with a lap time of 1m54.980. Nissany didn’t have Lady Luck on his side and was forced to start from the back of the field.

Saturday’s race 1 saw an action-packed first lap with Ghiotto and Nissany gaining places. Ghiotto moved up to third but unfortunately crashed out on lap 1 and was forced to retire. Nissany was running seventh after three laps and still moved into the lead during the pit stop sequence. After the pit stops, Nissan was consistently in the top five but crashed into the wall on lap 18 while battling for podium.

Today was another incident-marred race. Ghiotto stalled and, despite he was able to rejoin the field, lost a lot of time and couldn’t fight for a podium finish either. Nissany’s opening lap was amazing once again and climbed to ninth place. However, Nissany ran straight-on at T3 and was forced to retire.

The third round of the series will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during the Spanish Grand Prix, which is the home race for Campos Vexatec Racing.
