Progress made but no points on a difficult weekend for the whole team at Silverstone
The stage was set at Silverstone, with the British track hosting the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix this weekend, at Campos Racing had set its sights on the podium once again after the brilliant performance delivered a few days ago. However, Lady Luck wasn’t on its side this time and Alex Peroni, Sophia Flörsch and Alessio Deledda experienced two troublesome races in their Campos Racing-colored Dallara F3 cars.
On Friday, Australian Peroni finished 11th-fastest in the free practice session with a lap time of 1m46.008s. Flörsch and Deledda clocked lap times of 1m46.424s and 1m47.515s respectively before heading into the single qualifying session. In the afternoon, with 30 cars qualifying at the same time is never easy to put all sectors together and it was particularly the case this time. Last weekend’s podium finisher Peroni couldn’t improve his 1m46.084s and set to start from 18th on the grid. Further adrift, German female driver Flörsch and Italian Deledda made an all-Campos Racing row 15th with their lap times of 1m47.242s and 1m47.860s.
Campos Racing drivers expected to improve in race 1 and certainly they did. Peroni moved through the field to take the checkered flag in 14th place. Flörsch finished in 20th with Deledda ending up in 25th. A slightly improved starting point for race 2.
But their chances for Sunday got dashed soon. Both Peroni and Deledda were forced to make unscheduled pit stops in the first lap. While the Australian driver was able to rejoin the field at the back after replacing his front wing, Deledda’s race came to an early end due to car damage. Flörsch ran as high as 14th battling with the likes of Richard Verschoor, Roman Stanek, Max Fewtrell or Alexander Smolyar. Finally, the German youngster came in 19th place. Peroni, after his problematic first lap, ended up in 24th place.
After two consecutive events at Silverstone, Campos Racing now heads to Spain for its home round at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya next weekend.
