The Italian driver finished fourth on Saturday and brought 8th place home on Sunday. Series newcomers Laaksonen and Menchaca continued making progress in Le Castellet with their Campos Racing-run Dallara GP3/16 cars
Campos Racing and Leonardo Pulcini achieved a big haul of points in the GP3 Series, whose Round 2 took place at the Circuit Paul Ricard this weekend in the frame of the F1 French Grand Prix. Italy’s Pulcini now sits fifth in the Drivers’ Standings on 29 points and strengthens his title bid with another display of speed. Simo Laaksonen and Diego Menchaca continued to adapt to the championship despite they couldn’t score points just like in Barcelona.
After a seventh place finish in the free practice session, Pulcini clocked a time of 1m50.880s to line up 5th on the starting grid of race 1. Laaksonen and Menchaca weren’t able to put a perfect lap together and their best laps were 1m51.641s and 1m51.797s respectively.
On Saturday, Pulcini and Niko Kari swept positions corner after corner on lap 1 and the driver of Campos Racing ended the opening lap in sixth place. Pulcini’s race trim was rather strong posting a best lap of 1m53.167s on lap 19. Despite the DRS stayed disabled for almost the entire race, Pulcini still finished 4th. Laaksonen and Menchaca fought with everything they had to end up 13th and 14th respectively.
Today’s race 2 saw Pulcini starting from 5th on the grid but dropped to 7th on lap 1. Series leader Anthoine Hubert also moved past Pulcini for 7th on lap four but from then on Pulcini fended off his rivals to finish 8th. Laaksonen’s recovery drive gave him a 11th place at the end with Menchaca being forced to retire after two laps.
GP3 Series’ round 3 will take place at Red Bull Ring (Austria) next weekend.
