Nelson Piquet takes FIA Formula E lead in Berlin

His fourth place driving one of the China Racing cars in Germany, setting the fastest lap as well, and di Grassi exclusion were enough for topping the drivers´ championship in the series. Pic came 15th

Nelson Piquet Jr. has taken the lead of the FIA Formula E with only two rounds and three races remaining, one in Moscow and double-header in London. China Racing driver, whose cars are run by the team founded by Adrián Campos, has taken the most out in the race, in spite of he qualified 13th on the starting grid, clocking a lap time of 1:22.310. Brazil´s Piquet – who, as a curious fact, was born in Hidelberg (Germany) – completed a faultless race to finish 4th. Besides, he set the fastest lap of 1:24.435 at the end. Pit strategy played an important role again, and either Piquet or his teammate Charles Pic pitted one lap later than their rivals.

His fellow countryman Lucas di Grassi, his strongest rival in the fight for the title in the FIA Formula E, won the race but he was excluded from Berlin ePrix later as his car failed post-race scrutineering. The stewards found that six of the eight holes in the front win had been sealed.

After the race Piquet declared that “regardless of what happened to di Grassi after the race, we worked really hard and fought all the way to the front from 13th on the grid. The final result obviously helps us in the championship but we were already very competitive and it hasn’t happened by accident that we are leading the championship. I am really proud of the team, we never give up and in Moscow we’re going to be even stronger.”

Pic, with another China Racing car, ended up 15th.

Now the FIA Formula E heads to Russia, with the next round on June 6th.
