Mahindra Racing starts season with win and podium in Hong Kong

The M4ELECTRO cars, which Campos Racing runs in collaboration with Mahindra Racing, excelled during the curtain-raiser event. Rosenqvist won on Sunday and Heidfeld scored third place on Saturday

Mahindra Racing made a sensational start to the FIA Formula E 2017-18 season. India’s outfit, whose cars are run in collaboration with Campos Racing, delivered strong performances both race days with Felix Rosenqvist and Nick Heidfeld at the wheel. The Swede scored his first triumph of the season – earlier also securing pole position- and Heidfeld also stepped onto the podium as he finished third on Saturday.

During Saturday’s qualifying session, the M4ELECTRO cars made an immediate impression as Heidfeld secured front-row start with a lap of 1:03.350. On the other hand, Rosenqvist qualified 4th on the grid with his lap of 1:03.466. Heidfeld was an undisputed protagonist as he battled with Jean-Eric Vergne with both cars making contact several times. In the end, Heidfeld brought third place home in Vergne’s slipstream. Rosenqvist didn’t have Lady Luck on his side as he was hit by Luca Filippi. He still put in a good recovery drive to reach a top-ten finish but then the driver of Mahindra handed a 22-second penalty and was demoted to 14th.

On Sunday, Rosenqvist was a man on a mission and put the M4ELECTRO on pole for Mahindra with a time of 1:02.836. Heidfeld took 10th spot on the grid this time. The race saw a dramatic start as Rosenqvist spun from the lead. But the young ace still fought back to finish second overtaking several rivals.
Later, race winner Daniel Abt was excluded due a technical infringement and Rosenqvist inherited well-deserved top honors. Heidfeld couldn’t repeat a points finish this time.

The second round will take place in Marrakech on 13 January.
