Leonardo Pulcini and Campos Racing take Euroformula crown

Pulcini and the team founded by Adrián Campos tied it all up with still one round to go and sealed the 2016 championships in the drivers´ and teams´ standings respectively at Circuito de Jerez

Campos Racing and Leonardo Pulcini succeeded to claim both titles in the Euroformula Open and the Circuito de Jerez saw the Formula 3 squad led by Adrián Campos Jr. taking drivers´ championship with the Italian driver and, in addition, achieving another success in the teams´ standings. Pulcini scored his seventh win of the season on Sunday and it proved to be fundamental to emerge as Euroformula Open title bolter in style. Campos Racing added another new chapter to its success story in single-seater racing including racing series such as the GP2 Series, the Auto GP, the World Series by Renault, several Formula 3 championships or the Open Fortuna by Nissan.

During Thursday´s testing session, Pulcini spearheaded Campos Racing charge and with the four-driver line-up completing many laps and the team learning a massive amount of data ahead of Friday´s free practice sessions. Then, Mexico´s Diego Menchaca, Ecuador´s Julio Moreno and Pulcini himself made it into the top-ten and also Azerbaijan´s Gulhuseyn Abdullayev delivered a strong performance.

On Saturday morning, Pulcini put himself in pole position contention and finally qualified third in his Campos Racing Dallara F312. Behind, Menchaca set 6th- fastest lap time on the grid and neither Moreno nor Abdullayev could improve further their respective lap times due to traffic and started from the back of the field. Pulcini made a nice start but his best performance came when he passed Harrison Scott for third and with a few laps to go also moved up to second after overtaking Damiano Fioravanti to claim another fantastic podium finish. Menchaca came fifth and Moreno and Abdullayev finished 14th and 16th respectively.

On Sunday, Pulcini secured presence on the front-row for Campos Racing as he set 2nd-fastest lap time. Menchaca repeated with 6th place on the starting grid and Moreno improved to qualify 11th this time. Abdullayev would start from row nice on the grid. Pulcini sped up and moved into the lead at the start. From then on, he pulled away from the rest of the field and took the checkered flag first and secured his title. Menchaca came sixth and Abdullayev finished 14th. Moreno, following an unscheduled pit stop due to an eventful first lap, finished 16th but setting excellent lap times throughout the race.

My engineer and my mechanics worked perfectly with me and we made a quantum leap. Our weekends always ran almost perfectly. We always finished first or second. We worked hand-in-hand and it resulted in a fantastic title. Thank you very much Adrián Campos and Adri Campos Jr!”, Pulcini underlined after the race.

Adrián Campos Jr. also added “we are extremely happy. We managed to make steady progress in the series every year after returning to compete in the Euroformula Open. We finished fourth on our first year, then third and finally we finished vice champions in 2015. Now, we have won both titles. That´s where we belong! Congratulations to the Champ! Leo completed an excellent season. He was very strong. His worst result was a fourth place, so it explains his marvelous season. Our engineers and mechanics performed at a level bordering perfection. His engineer, Germán Sánchez, won the series as a racing driver and now as our Chief Engineer. It is something unique”.

The Euroformula Open will come to an end at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya next weekend.
