The Anglo-Korean driver stepped third onto the podium in his Campos Racing-entered Dallara F2 2018. Samaia also delivered a promising performance today
Campos Racing and Jack Aitken secured their first podium of the 2020 FIA Formula 2 Championship season after a thrilling Saturday’s feature race in the frame of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. It was a consistent race overall as Brazilian Guilherme Samaia also lapped in competitive lap times throughout the race.
On Friday, Aitken posted the 7th-fastest lap time with his 1m40.252s with Samaia clocking a lap time of 1m42.716s. Later in qualifying, Aitken was able to put all the sectors together in his flying lap to secure third spot on the starting grid with personal best time of 1m39.278s, a mere two tenths off the pole position time. Further adrift, Samaia posted a lap time of 1m41.061s.
It was a promising Saturday ahead with Aitken in podium contention and finally Campos Racing met their goals. Aitken briefly dropped to fourth on the opening lap but the Anglo-Korean moved up to third on lap 3 when Dan Ticktum made a mistake and went slightly off track. Aitken pulled away from his rivals before making his mandatory pit stop in lap 6 for a fresh set of the hard compound. Samaia was completing a strong first stint on hard tires.
Aitken ran virtually in third place throughout the race. When the pit window was over and every driver had made his mandatory pit stop, the Briton was running in third place once again. In the closing minutes of the race, Aitken even pushed to attack Christian Lundgaard, who is running in second. At the same time, the driver in Campos Racing colors kept Louis Deletraz and Nikita Mazepin at bay in the final laps. Campos Racing’s effort finally paid off with Aitken putting in a faultless drive at his home round at Silverstone! Samaia finished 20th but lapping a 1m43s lap in race conditions.
Sunday’s sprint race will take place at 11.10 (CET). Aitken will start from 6th on the reverse grid.
