Jack Aitken takes second podium of the weekend in Baku

Aitken secured a last-gasp rostrum finish on Sunday after another faultless performance for Campos Racing. Boccolacci took the checkered flag in seventh place

Campos Racing and its drivers Jack Aitken and Dorian Boccolacci completed a nearly-perfect weekend at the Baku City Circuit, which hosted the second round of the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship in the frame of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Following his race win on Saturday, Briton Aitken stepped onto the podium once again with Boccolacci also collecting more points for the championship.

Today Boccolacci and Aitken took 6th and 8th spots respectively on the reverse starting grid. Just like yesterday, when the lights went out both Campos Racing drivers made a good start and avoided the classic first-corner pileup, which immediately brought the safety car out. Aitken had moved up to fifth and Boccolacci was running in seventh place.

At the restart, Aitken and Boccolacci moved past Nikita Mazepin. Unfortunately, Boccolacci dropped two places as Nyck de Vries and Luca Ghiotto were hot on his tail and he couldn’t fend them off. Shortly after, Aitken passed Sean Gelael to move into the podium places.

The street circuit saw more race incidents, which made necessary the safety car again. After one of them, Aitken lost one place as de Vries made an opportunistic move on the British driver to take the third position. But Aitken never gave up and managed to retake the third place in the very last lap to finish third. Boccolacci also slipped past Gelael in the dying moments of the race to take a seventh place finish.

After the race weekend, Aitken sits second in the Drivers’ standings with 43 points and 19 points behind the leader. Boccolacci ranks eleventh with 12 points. Besides, Campos Racing now sits second with 55 points in the Teams’ Championship.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will host the third round of the series on 11-12 May, which is also the home round for Campos Racing.

Adrián Campos (Campos Racing President): “It was such a great weekend for Campos Racing! Jack showed how competitive his car is and quick enough to fight for everything in the FIA Formula 2. Despite a DRS problem, he still managed to step onto the podium once again. I’m very proud of our work throughout the weekend. This is the way forward!”

Jack Aitken (Campos Racing Driver): “I’m very happy with the weekend, we showed our true potential! Now we just have to keep up the momentum for the next rounds, we’re in a strong position to build on this.”
