Felix Rosenqvist takes over championship lead with Marrakech win

Rosenqvist secured his second win of the season after overtaking Buemi for the lead with four laps to go. Heidfeld put in a recovery drive to finish 7th from the back of the field

Mahindra Racing, whose M4ELECTRO cars are run in collaboration with Campos Racing, scored their second triumph of the FIA Formula E season with Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist making a move on leader Sebastien Buemi in the final laps. German Nick Heidfeld collected valuable points once again after starting from the back of the field to come 7th.

In the morning, Rosenqvist qualified third in the superpole session with a lap time of 1:21.196 to secure a row two start. Unfortunately, Heidfeld hit the wall and was forced to start from 18th as he couldn’t complete a competitive lap time.

The 33-lap race got underway at four o’clock and Rosenqvist managed to fend off his rivals and after the opening lap the Swede was still running in third place right behind of Buemi and Sam Bird. Heidfeld also passed several cars and moved up to 13th after only two laps. The former F1 driver still gained two other laps shortly after. Up at the front, Rosenqvist was still in the slipstream of Buemi and Bird, but the driver of Mahindra Racing passed the latter for the second on lap 16, heading into the pit lane for the mandatory pit stop one lap later.

With the second car, Rosenqvist was lapping faster than Buemi and finally moved into the lead with four laps to go before the checkered flag waved. Behind, Heidfeld came seventh despite he spun after being hit while fighting with Maro Engel and Edoardo Mortara.

By clinching his second win of the season, Ronsenqvist secures series lead on 54 points. Heidfeld sits 7th on 24 points. Mahindra Racing tops Teams’ Championships standings on 75 points.

The FIA Formula E will head to Santiago de Chile for Round 4 on February 3.
