Falchero scores fifth place finish at Spa-Francorchams from pole

Falchero achieves best result yet at Spa-Francorchams after securing pole positon for Sunday’s race. Hyman took 10th and Siebert was forced to retire both days

Campos Racing took positive results away from the Belgian round of the GP3 Series at Spa-Francorchamps. Julien Falchero, Raoul Hyman and Marcos Siebert ran into mixed luck as the Frenchman secured Sunday´s pole position and finished 5th and his South-African teammate took another top-ten finish. On the other hand, Siebert’s race came to an early end due to mechanical issues.

On Friday, Siebert spearheaded the Campos Racing charge by taking seventh ahead of Hyman. Falchero finished 11th-fastest. After a dry practice session, qualifying took place in wet conditions. Falchero took 9th spot on the starting grid with a best lap of 2:29.110. Behind, Siebert and Hyman lined up 14th and 18th respectively with their 2:29.546 and 2:29.925 respectively.

In race 1, Falchero overtook two cars to move up to seventh with Siebert and Hyman running in 13th and 18th respectively. After a Virtual Safety Car period in the first laps, Giuliano Alesi passed Falchero for 8th place but the driver racing under the Campos Racing banner still managed to secure his pole positon for Sunday. Siebert was running in 9th after several overtakes but mechanical issues ruined his chances and retired from the race. Hyman came 14th.

On Sunday, Alesi took the lead from Falchero and the start and the latter still remained in podium contention for most of the race. GP3 Series leader George Russell and Ryan Tveter overtook him on lap six and took the chequered flag fifth behind Japanese driver Nirei Fukuzumi. Hyman put in a good recovery drive to finish tenth. Siebert retired from race 2 again.

The GP3 Series will head to Italy for Monza, the Italian Tempio della velocità, next weekend.
