ETCC champion Kris Richard joins Campos Racing for WTCC debut

Swiss Richard, who claimed the ETCC title last year, will replace Guerrieri to drive the Campos Racing-entered Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1. Guerrieri will replace the injuried Monteiro at Honda factory team

The World Touring Car Championship will head to Japan for its antepenultimate round of the season at the Twin Ring Motegi. Campos Racing will contest the WTCC Race of Japan with a new driver as Swiss Kris Richard will join the Spain-based team to drive its Chevrolet Cruze TC1 replacing Esteban Guerrieri.

Richard, aged 25, took the European Touring Car Championship honors last year and earlier this season competed in the ADAC TCR Germany. Richard will make his debut in the World Touring Car Championship as Guerrieri was named new Honda factory driver replacing Tiago Monteiro, who sustained injuries following a crash while carrying out a private testing. Campos Racing thank him and wish him well.

“We are very happy to be part of Esteban’s success and we are delighted he has got this opportunity with a factory team,” said Campos Racing’s Ruben Espin. “Although we were hoping he could continue his push for the WTCC Trophy with our team, one of our main goals was to help Esteban develop as a WTCC driver in the hope that one day a chance like this came along. Now it has, we are really pleased for him because it’s richly deserved after all his hard work and outstanding on-track performances. He will continue to be part of the Campos Racing family and we wish him all the best for WTCC Race of Japan this weekend. Our focus will now be on helping the next young talent to join our team, Kris Richard.”

“I’d like to thank Campos Racing for their positivity throughout this process and to everybody who has helped in making my move to Honda possible”, said Guerrieri.

Twin Ring Motegi is home of WTCC Race of Japan for the third consecutive season.

After China, the RML-built Chevrolet cars will gain ten extra kilos.

Both races will take place on Sunday at 13.45 (Opening laps – 11 laps) and 15.00 (Main laps – 13 laps), local time.
