Double points finish for Mitch Evans in Sepang

New Zealander´s secured a double points finish for Pertamina Campos Racing: Evans started on pole on Sunday to came 6th and finished 8th on Saturday. Gelael finished 16th in race 1 and was forced to retire from race 2

Pertamina Campos Racing finished within the points with its duo of drivers in the GP2 Series, Indonesia´s Sean Gelael and New Zealand´s Mitch Evans, in the frame of the Gran Prix of Malaysia in Sepang. Evans claimed two top-ten finishes and started from the pole position on Sunday. Unfortunately, Gelael put a great effort but with no reward.

Unlike other events, the single free practice session took place on Thursday and both Pertamina Campos Racing made a good start to the weekend with Evans clocking a time of 1:43.578 and Gelael produced a lap of 1:44.215, completing 13 and 14 laps each. On Friday´s qualifying session, red flags and traffic issues dashed their hopes and they qualified 16th (Evans) and 20th (Gelael) on the starting grid. Anyway, race pace proved to be competitive and it gave a great deal of confidence and optimism.

Therefore on Saturday, during feature race with mandatory pit stop, both Campos Racing drivers moved through the field. Evans moved up to 8th and secured pole position for race two putting in a brilliant defensive driving. On the other hand, Gelael finished 16th.

On Sunday, Evans couldn´t fend Luca Ghiotto on lap one. Following a safety car period on lap two, the driver racing under Pertamina Campos Racing banner managed to keep Raffaele Marciello behind for a couple of laps before he passed him for second. With seven laps to go, Evans was still running in podium contention but as tire wear got worst, he dropped to 6th. This time, Gelael was forced to retire with six laps into the race.

The season finale will take place on 25-26 November at Yas Marina Circuit.
