Campos Racing takes double podium finish to strengthen its bid to win titles

Italy´s Pulcini and Mexico´s Menchaca stepped onto the podium in race 2 at Red Bull Ring. Ecuadorian Moreno also made it into the points

Campos Racing emerged strengthened from Red Bull Ring, where round 5 of the Euroformula Open took place. Italian Leonardo Pulcini, Mexican Diego Menchaca, Ecuadorian Julio Moreno and Azerbaijani Gulhuseyn Abdullayev faced different fortunes over the course of the weekend.

On Friday, Campos Racing was competitive right from the start as Pulcini, Moreno and Menchaca finished in the top-ten 3rd, 6th and 7th respectively. The following day, Pulcini took fourth on the starting grid and his teammate Menchaca secured 6th on row three. Moreno and Abdullayev qualified 11th and 18th respectively. Unfortunately, race one was marred by a first-lap pile-up where Campos Racing lost three cars. Pulcini managed to avoid the incident and moved up to second but Menchaca, Moreno and Abdullayev were caught up in the mayhem. Following a safety car period, at the restart, Pulcini dropped several places when fighting for the lead but still gained positions to finish 4th.

Finally, on Sunday, Pulcini set 3rd-fastest lap time in qualifying and Menchaca also performed particularly well to take 7th spot on the grid. Unfortunately, Abdullayev couldn´t take part to the Sunday´s race after his crash on Saturday and Moreno started from the back of the field. Pulcini pass his title rival Ferdinand Habsburg at the start and remained second for the entire race. As Habsburg retired later, Pulcini claimed a valuable podium finish. Menchaca moved up to fourth very early in the race and put pressure on Antoni Ptak to force him into mistake. Finally, Ptak spun and Menchaca moved into the third position. Moreno also delivered a remarkable recovery drive to finish ninth.

After Red Bull Ring, Campos Racing has extended team and drivers´ championship lead. Pulcini leads on 192 points and Menchaca ranks third. In the teams´ standings Campos Racing remains on top on 76 points. The next round takes place at Monza next month.
