Campos Racing shows competitive pace even though can’t convert it to strong results

Peroni secured Sunday’s pole position with an 8th place on Saturday and scored his first points of the season. Fernández also shone in race 1 putting in a brilliant recovery drive before retiring. Deledda continues his learning curve

Campos Racing couldn’t score a podium in the second venue of the FIA Formula 3, which was held in the frame of the French Grand Prix in Le Castellet. Alex Peroni, Sebas Fernández and Alessio Deledda drove the three Dallara F3 2019 cars in Campos Racing colors and they all made excellent progress.

On Friday, Australian Peroni captured the tenth spot on the starting grid for Campos Racing. Peroni posted a lap time of 1m50.316s with his teammates Fernández and Deledda clocking times of 1m51.272s and 1m54.226s, which left them 26th and 29th on the starting grid.

Race 1 saw Peroni running in the points-paying positions from the very beginning. In fact, the Australian was as high as sixth in his Campos Racing-run Dallara. Fernández was another eye-catcher with the Spaniard moving through the field from the back. Fernández had moved up to eighth but he was out of the race following a clash with Niko Kari. An unfortunately end to a brilliant effort. Finally, Peroni took the checkered flag in 8th place after 20 laps to secure the pole position for race 2 on the reverse starting grid. Deledda also gained several places to finish 16th.

On Sunday, Peroni fended off Yuki Tsunoda and Marcus Armstrong when the lights went out. He kept the lead until lap 8 when Tsunoda moved past him. Unfortunately, the close duel between Tsunoda and Peroni vanished their gap like an ice cube in the sun. Robert Shwartzman took the lead and other drivers such as Pedro Piquet and Jehan Daruvala also overtook Peroni, who already was struggling with tire wear. After 20 laps, Peroni finished 14th with Deledda making it to the finish in 23rd following an eventful race. Fernández was forced to retire.

With no time to rest, the FIA Formula 3 will head to Austria next weekend as the ultra-rapid Red Bull Ring hosts the third round of the season.
