Anglo-Korean Aitken put in a recovery drive on Sunday to finish 8th at the Yas Marina Circuit in his Campos Racing-run Dallara F2 2018. Japanese Sato continued learning and improvement process in the FIA Formula 2 Championship
Campos Racing brought to a positive end the 2019 FIA Formula 2 Championship season after a challenging weekend in Abu Dhabi. Jack Aitken and Marino Sato consistently showed a good pace at the Yas Marina Circuit and overcame some issues step by step.
On Friday morning, Aitken and Sato performed well in the free practice session with both Campos Racing drivers completing 23 laps in total. Aitken clocked a lap time of 1m52.657s and his teammate posted a personal best of 1m54.136s. Qualifying resulted in another yellow marring session in the dying moments, which prevented both Aitken and Sato from improving their lap times at the end. Aitken’s lap time of 1m50.520s was enough to line up 8th on the starting grid with Sato starting from 16th with his lap of 1m51.829s.
Saturday’s feature race saw Aitken making a nice start and the Anglo-Korean driver moved up to sixth right behind Nyck de Vries. Aitken ran in the top-six before heading into the pit lane for his mandatory pit stop, in which he switched to hard compound. Aitken set a good pace and moved past de Vries. Unfortunately, Aitken struggled with tire wear in the final laps and relegated him down the order to take the checkered flag in eleventh place. Sato crossed the finish line in 18th place.
On Sunday, Aitken gained a place at the start and moved himself up into tenth and on to the tail of Jordan King. He finally moved past King in lap 18 after taking advantage of a VSC period. Aitken still charged in the final lap to attempt a move on Mick Schumacher. Aitken finally passed Schumacher with just a few corners and sealed eighth place. Sato came sixteenth today with his orange-colored Dallara F2 2018.
Campos Racing will continue working in Abu Dhabi as the post-season testing will take place next week December 5-7.
