Campos Racing achieves a double podium finish at season opener

Iorio and Vivacqua, with their third place finishes on Saturday and Sunday respectively, completed an extremely positive start to the season for Campos Racing. Florescu also claimed a podium in the rookie class

Campos Racing scored two podiums at Euroformula F3 Open’s season opener, which took place at Autódromo do Estoril. Matheus Iorio and Thiago Vivacqua stepped third onto the podiums on Saturday and Sunday respectively. On the other hand, Petru Florescu also claimed a third place in the rookies’ class. Simo Laaksonen delivered a strong performance in race and contributed to top overall performance.

On Thursday and Friday, Campos Racing worked with their drivers throughout five sessions, private and free practice, focusing on set-up. Vivacqua took 2nd in the cumulative rankings and his teammates finished 6th (Florescu), 8th (Laaksonen) and 1th (Iorio).

On Saturday, in Q1, Vivacqua spearheaded Campos Racing charge to take 4th spot on the starting grid with his lap time of 1:32.060. Iorio, Florescu and Laaksonen were 10th, 11th and 12th fastest. In race one, Lady Luck wasn’t on Vivacqua’s side as the Brazilian was forced to retire due to mechanical issues when he was running in podium contention. Iorio put in a brilliant recovery drive and moved through the field to finish third at the end. Florescu came sixth and third in the rookies’ classification. Laaksonen’s race also came to an early end, just like Vivacqua.

On Sunday, Vivacqua and Iorio started from row four and his teammates Laaksonen and Florescu qualified tenth and thirteenth respectively. This time, Vivacqua was determined to achieve a podium finish and, after passing a rival for third on lap nine, the Brazilian driver came third. Laaksonen finished sixth overall and fourth rookie, losing his chance of podium on the very last lap. Florescu finished 7th and Iorio 9th.

The second round will take place at Spa-Francorchamps on 27-28 May.
