The Australian young gun made an amazing comeback to the series in his Campos Racing-run Dallara F3 2019 to seal a third-place finish at Red Bull Ring. Peroni also posted the fastest race lap
Australian driver Alex Peroni has started the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship season in style as he finished third in his Campos Racing-entered Dallara during today’s Race 1 in Spielberg. Campos Racing, the only Spanish team in the F1 feeder series, also proves its competitiveness from the very first race. Peroni’s performance rewarded him with a well-deserved result on the rostrum after showing extraordinary form throughout the Saturday’s race 1, which is still more remarkable considering the horrific crash in which the Aussie driver got caught at Monza last year.
Peroni took eighth place on the starting grid with a lap time of 1m19.709s during Friday’s qualifying session. Just a fact to prove how competitive the FIA Formula 3 is this season. The top-22 was within a second of the pole-sitter lap time. Further adrift, Sophia Flörsch and Alessio Deledda made an all-Campos Racing row 14.
Today, when the lights went out, Peroni avoided any clash on the first lap and moved up to fourth and put himself in podium contention. Shortly after, he also moved past Lirim Zendeli to take third place. Peroni kept pushing until the very end as he was right behind Logan Sargeant. It allowed him to go on a late charge and post the fastest lap earning two extra points for the championship. German female racer Flörsch came home in 26th place with Italian Deledda crossing the finish line in 29th after serving a 10-second stop-and-go penalty.
Sunday’s race 2 will take the curtain down on the first venue of the season.
